At
Georgeville, N. S. on Feb. 12th inst, John A. Gillis in the 74th year of his age. Kind,
upright and a good neighbor, he was highly esteemed in the community. A practical and
sincere Christian and a devoted member of Holy Church, he led an exemplary life which
earned for him his eternal reward. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends and
acquaintances. He is survived by his wife, and a family of five sons and seven daughters
to cherish his memory. RI P

John J. Gillis
At Boston City
Hospital on Jan. 4th, 1949 there passed to his eternal reward, John J. Gillis, of Roxbury,
Mass., formerly of Georgeville, Ant. Co., after a short illness and receiving the last
Sacraments, he peacefully passed away at the age of 64 years. "Big Jack" as he
was popularly known was the son of the late John Angus and Isabel Gillis, and visited the
home each summer for many years and will be much missed by his many friends. He was
predeceased by his wife Jessie just a few years ago, also his father, two sisters Margaret
and Catherine and a brother Dougald some years ago. He leaves to mourn their loss six
sisters and three brothers, also his aged mother who since passed away. The deceased was a
member of St. Josephs Church, Roxbury. After a Requiem Mass sung by Rev. Father
Tobin, he was laid to rest beside his wife in St. Josephs Cemetery. R. I. P.

There, passed away at St.
Marthas Hospital, Daniel J. Gillis, of Georgeville. Born August 17, 1904, son of the
late John Gillis and Mrs. Isabel (MacDonald) Gillis. He was 63. Surviving are three
sisters, a number of nieces and nephews, also grandnieces and grandnephews.
Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. Georges Church, Georgeville. Interment was
in the parish cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joseph Brown, John D. Brown, Leo MacInnis, John D. Heffernan,
Angus MacDonald, and John R. Gillis. R.I.P.

At
Georgeville, N. S. on March 22, 1949 there passed to her eternal reward. Isabel, relict of
the late John A. Gillis, in her 88th year. Consoled during her three months illness by the
frequent reception of the Sacraments she was blessed by the presence of her pastor at her
bedside at her death and received Viaticum from his hands less than twenty minutes before
her demise. The deceased will be greatly missed by her many friends and leaves to cherish
her memory three sons, Donald on the old homestead, Neil at Livingstons Cove, Angus
in Vancouver, and six daughters, Mrs. Jessie OMeara, Mrs. John Dineere, Mrs. Carl
Josephson, Boston, Mass, Nancy at home, Mrs. Christena MacDonald, Pleasant Valley, Mrs.
John D. Heffernan at Georgeville. She was predeceased by her husband in 1923, and by two
daughters and two sons, one of whom died Jan. 4, last. Her remains were laid to rest in
Georgeville Cemetery beside her husband, son and a daughter on March 24, following Requiem
Mass sung by Rev. R. MacPherson.

Isabel's birthdate was actually 8 Jan 1858.

Boston, Mass, Dec 22, 1933, Margaret Bell Gillis, beloved daughter of the late John and
Isabel Gillis, Georgeville, who died suddenly while at her work. Her remains
were taken to her native home in Georgeville, where burial took place, Tuesday, December
26, after high requiem high Mass celebrated by Rev. J. W. Chisholm. Deceased leaves to
mourn their loss, her sorrowing mother, six sisters, and four brothers. R.I.P.

HEFFERNAN, Margaret M.(Girlie)-85, Georgeville, Antigonish Co., died March 28,
1998, in St. Marthas Regional Hospital. Born in Georgeville, she was the daughter of
Elizabeth Gillis. She was a well known member of the community. She worked as a
custodian at Antigonish Regional High School for a number of years. She is survived by her
husband John Dan; daughters, Kaye (Mrs. Silvio Artuso), Guelph, Ont.; Patsy (Mrs. John
Wallace), Malignant Cove; Marion (Mrs. Joe Neary), Cloverville; sons, John D. and wife
Ruth, Guelph; Frank and wife Minnie, Roddie & wife Elaine, all of Antigonish; Leo
& wife Geraldine, Peterborough, Ont; Bernie and wife Brenda, Malignant Cove; Donald,
Georgeville; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by son,
Carmen; a daughter in infancy; grandson Paul. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. today in
St. Georges Church, Georgeville, Rev. Gilles LeBlanc officiating. Burial in the
parish cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association of
Nova Scotia. Arrangements entrusted to C. L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish.

Funeral services for the late Roderick
"Roddy" Joseph Heffernan, 50, of Shamrock Acres, North Grant, took place January
29, in St. Ninian's Cathedral, with Rev. Bill Crispo concelebrating with Rev. Gilles
LeBlanc. Burial was in the Georgeville Cemetery.
Mr. Heffernan died January 26, at home.
Readers at the Mass were Bev Novak, Lisa Heffernan and Joanna Neary.
Active pallbearers were John and Anthony Grace, Bill MacGillivray, Ron King, Ralph Hemlow
and Gerald Kennedy.
Honorary Pallbearers were Colin MacVicar, George Fanning, Brian
Landry, Frank Delorey, Allen MacPherson, Joe Purcell and Duncan Purdy.
Born in Georgeville, Antigonish County, he was the son of John Dan and
the late Margaret (Gillis) Heffernan.
He worked for Stora Forest Industries for over 20 years. He
enjoyed nature and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Elaine Gillis;
twins, Mark Joseph and Emily Anne; three sisters, Kaye (Mrs. Silvio) Artuso, Guelph,
Ontario; Patsy (Mrs.John) Wallace, Malignant Cove; and Marion (Mrs.Joe) Nearly,
Cloverville; and five brothers, John D., Guelph; Frank, Antigonish; Leo, Peterborough,
Ont.; Bernie, Malignant Cove; and Donald, Georgeville.
He was predeceased by a brother, Carmen; and a sister, in
infancy. |
